Both before and after the flop in any limit Holdem game, it is helpful to be able to make a reasonably accurate estimate of the types and numbers of playable hands that you are likely to be competing against.
Much of your decision making involves the business of 'putting' opposing players 'on their hands' (or in other words, figuring out what cards they are playing). Experienced Holdem players are often very good at this. An understanding of the types of hands that are most likely to be against you helps prevent both underestimating and overestimating your competition.
One of the most important aspects of Texas Hold'em is the value of each two-card hand before the flop. The decision of how to play your first two cards is something you face every hand, and the value of your first two cards is highly correlated to your probability of winning. In Texas Hold'em, poker odds are THE probability tool you need as a poker player. In fact, you should always be thinking about poker odds - yours and your opponents' - when making decisions. In short, poker odds is the probability of you winning that hand, or the price it offers (pot odds). In the case of Texas Hold'em, there's the 2 pocket cards and 5 on the board. This way of working out the probabilities would be the more accurate way - however, just to note, the probabilities worked out on 5 of 52 are practically the same, and far easier to calculate.

The five different types of two card Hold'em hands highlighted here are those that are most commonly played. They are not shown in any particular order and within the groups are powerful hands that are almost always played, down to marginal value hands that can be played under certain betting conditions.
The rest of the hands, shown as All Others, are all the very weak hands that most players hardly ever play.

For those unfamiliar with outs, an 'out' is the term used in the after-flop betting rounds to describe any card among the unseen cards in the deck that can substantially improve the value of your hand on the next card turned up.
For example, if after the flop you happen to have a total of four hearts, then your hand has nine 'outs' because there are nine of the original thirteen hearts still left in the unseen remaining deck. A much weaker draw hand would be for example, an inside straight. This hand only has four outs because the only cards left in the deck that can complete the straight would be the four cards of the missing denomination.
Of course, the more outs you have the better chance you have of making a strong hand. This chart offers some extra ways to look at and evaluate those chances. All Texas Holdem hands have 47 unseen cards after the flop and 46 after the turn. The chart is nothing more than the number of outs and these two unseen cards amounts, expressed in different ways.

It might be interesting for you to note that when you double the number of outs, you get a number that is approximately the expected hit percentage of a single draw to your hand. For example, 8 outs equals about 16% (actually 17.02%) and 12 outs equals about 24% (actually 25.53%). You might find similar references or comparisons that you can use.
